Maersk has cautioned customers about the possibility of navigation restrictions on the Amazon River as seasonal changes in water levels could affect vessel operations and cargo movements in northern Brazil.
The shipping line said it is closely monitoring river conditions, with lower water levels potentially limiting vessel draft and reducing the amount of cargo ships can safely carry. If restrictions are introduced, sailing schedules, transit times and cargo capacity on services calling at Amazon River ports could be affected.
Ports such as Manaus and other inland terminals rely heavily on navigable river channels for container and general cargo transport. Prolonged periods of low water can require shipping lines to adjust vessel loading, deploy smaller ships or implement operational changes to maintain service continuity.
Maersk said it is working with port authorities, terminal operators and local partners to assess evolving conditions and minimise disruptions. The company is also keeping customers informed of any operational changes and advising them to plan shipments in advance to reduce the impact of potential delays.
Seasonal fluctuations in the Amazon River have increasingly influenced logistics operations in recent years, prompting carriers to introduce contingency measures such as revised schedules, cargo restrictions and temporary surcharges when necessary.
By issuing an early advisory, Maersk aims to help customers prepare for possible supply chain disruptions while ensuring the safe and efficient movement of cargo through one of Brazil’s most important inland shipping corridors.
