Mahindra & Mahindra is advancing plans for its largest integrated manufacturing complex in India, with the company set to take possession of the first 800 acres of a proposed 1,500-acre greenfield site in Nagpur.
The facility is planned to manufacture internal-combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles, as well as tractors, with combined annual capacity expected to exceed 6 lakh units once fully operational.
Designed as a flexible manufacturing hub, the Nagpur complex will allow Mahindra to adjust its production mix as consumer demand shifts between conventional and electric powertrains. The company has yet to disclose the specific models or platforms that will be produced at the site.
The project will be supported by a 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar, with components expected to serve the new Nagpur facility as well as Mahindra’s existing plants in Chakan and Nashik. The development is aimed at creating a broader manufacturing and sourcing ecosystem across Maharashtra.
The proposed Nagpur site will be significantly larger than Mahindra’s existing manufacturing footprints, with Chakan estimated at around 650 acres and Nashik at approximately 150 acres.
Focus on Skills and Workforce
Mahindra is also preparing its workforce for the new facility through a planned skilling centre in Nagpur, covering areas including mechanical operations, welding and painting, along with capabilities required for multi-powertrain vehicle and tractor manufacturing.
Experienced employees from Mahindra’s existing manufacturing operations will also be considered for roles at Nagpur over the next two to three years through a selection process assessing technical skills, behaviours, alignment with company values and collaboration capabilities.
Mahindra has not yet disclosed the total workforce requirement or projected employment generation. Further details are expected as the project progresses.
Once fully developed, the 1,500-acre Nagpur complex will become Mahindra’s largest integrated manufacturing facility in India, providing substantial additional capacity while giving the automaker flexibility to respond to the country’s evolving mobility and powertrain landscape.
