A trial run of a goods train was conducted for the first time on Wednesday on new Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical lift bridge, connecting the country’s mainland to Rameswaram island.

Today, the Railways conducted load deflection trials on the new Pamban Railway Sea Bridge at Ramanathapuram with two locomotives and 11 loaded wagons.

Load deflection testing was carried out on the New Pamban Bridge using twin GOC WDG 4D from Golden Rock Shed. The trial run was successfully conducted by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) in collaboration with Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Chennai. The purpose behind the test was to assess the structural integrity and performance of the bridge under load conditions.

With the commissioning of the Pamban Bridge, the distance between Mandapam and Rameswaram will reduce to just 20 minutes.
