The first rake of electric auto rickshaws, manufactured by Montra Electric of the Murugappa Group, were flagged off on Monday from Tada railway station in the Chennai Division of Southern Railway to Rangapani Railway Station in the Northeast Frontier Railway.

The consignment moved in 25 NMG wagons was facilitated by IP Integrated Services Pvt Ltd, a logistics partner, says a release from Southern Railway.

The consignment marks a new chapter in freight operations of the Chennai Division of SR, creating opportunities for large scale transport of electric vehicles through the rail network, it adds.

Each rake movement contributed revenue of ₹19 lakhs, and with eight rakes projected during the current financial year, the traffic is expected to add revenue of nearly ₹1.5 crore, the release added.
