The Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) is exploring a strategic collaboration with Japan’s Urban Renaissance Agency (UR) to support major waterfront redevelopment and port-city integration projects envisioned under its Vision 2047 Master Plan.
During a high-level meeting held in Japan on Wednesday, MbPA Chairman M Angamuthu and UR Director General Takehiro Umezu discussed opportunities for cooperation in waterfront transformation, integrated mobility planning, urban design, and sustainable development of port-linked areas.
According to MbPA, UR—renowned for its expertise in urban regeneration and integrated city planning—expressed strong interest in contributing to Mumbai Port’s long-term development vision. The discussions focused on adopting Japanese best practices in waterfront redevelopment, enhancing public access to waterfront spaces, and strengthening the integration between the port and the city.
A key area of discussion was future mobility integration within the port estate, including the proposed integration of four stations of Mumbai Metro Line 11 in and around Sewri. UR also indicated its willingness to act as a knowledge and design-planning partner, potentially working alongside Japan International Cooperation Agency on planning and infrastructure initiatives.
Commenting on the engagement, Angamuthu said Japan’s experience in planned urban redevelopment and waterfront transformation offers valuable insights that could help improve port efficiency, create vibrant waterfront destinations, and contribute to Mumbai’s future growth.
The proposed collaboration aligns with Mumbai Port Authority’s broader efforts to transform underutilized waterfront areas into modern, sustainable, and publicly accessible urban spaces while maintaining the port’s strategic maritime role.
