Pakistan Railways has added 30 new freight wagons to its network as part of efforts to modernize the country’s freight transport system and support the business sector.
The induction ceremony took place at Lahore Cantt Railway Station on Friday, where CEO Railways Aamir Ali Baloch said the wagons are designed to meet international standards and can carry 60 tons of cargo each. The wagons are manufactured locally in Pakistan.
Baloch said Pakistan Railways plans to introduce a total of 850 new freight wagons by the end of the year. So far, 250 wagons have been integrated into the system, with the remaining expected to be operational by December 31.
He noted that railway freight charges are lower than road transport costs, making rail a cost-effective option for traders. Baloch also outlined plans to introduce more modern freight trains as railway infrastructure and track capacity improve.
The ceremony was attended by Project Director Ishaq Butt and other senior officials of Pakistan Railways.
