Patna is moving ahead with plans to develop a water metro network along with two cruise terminals, as Bihar seeks to expand inland water transport and strengthen tourism infrastructure in the state.

The proposed water metro is expected to provide an additional public transport option for residents while easing pressure on the city’s road network. The project will focus on using the Ganga and connected waterways to improve passenger connectivity between key locations.

Two cruise terminals are also planned as part of the wider water-based infrastructure push. The terminals are expected to support passenger and tourist services and improve Patna’s connectivity with other destinations along the Ganga.

The development is aimed at promoting inland waterways as a cleaner and more efficient mode of transportation while creating new opportunities for river tourism and related businesses.

The proposed facilities could also generate economic activity around the riverfront, including tourism, hospitality, transport and local services. Improved passenger infrastructure is expected to make river-based travel more accessible and encourage greater use of waterways.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to develop inland water transport and promote the use of India’s rivers for both passenger and commercial movement.

Further project details, including routes, terminal locations, investment requirements and implementation timelines, are expected to be finalised as planning progresses.
