The Port of Gothenburg has handled 685,000 TEUs in the first three quarters of 2024, 8,000 TEUs more than the same period last year.

Although the number of containers handled at the Port of Gothenburg has slightly decreased during Q3 of this year, the port is still on track for a record year.

Compared to 2023 – which was the port’s best year ever in terms of container handling – there is still a 1 per cent increase during the first three quarters of this year.

The handling of laden containers continued to increase by 5 per cent during the period. However, the handling of empty containers decreased significantly, which had a noticeable impact on the total numbers.

The number of containers transported to and from the port by rail increased by 7 per cent during Q3. According to the port, this growth was mainly driven by import-heavy hinterland rail destinations like Falköping and Nässjö, as well as new rail shuttles to and from destinations in northern Sweden.

The ongoing European economic downturn continues to impact Ro-Ro volumes in many ports, including the Port of Gothenburg.

During the first nine months, the total Ro-Ro volume decreased by 4 per cent to 389,000 units. Volumes to non-European countries increased slightly.

Earlier in September, the Port of Gothenburg inaugurated its brand-new 144,000-square-metre port terminal.
