The Port of Savannah handled more than 500,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in September, setting a new monthly container record and highlighting continued strength in cargo activity at the US East Coast gateway.

The record performance reflects sustained demand for containerised trade and the port’s growing role in handling imports and exports for businesses across the United States. Strong volumes also underline the importance of Savannah’s terminal capacity and inland logistics connections in supporting cargo movement.

Container growth at the port is being supported by a broad mix of commodities, including consumer goods, industrial products, machinery and other manufactured cargo. Higher container activity can also provide a boost to trucking, rail and warehousing operations connected to the port.

The September record comes as global shipping markets continue to adjust to changing trade patterns, vessel deployments and supply-chain conditions. US importers and exporters have been managing shifting freight flows amid geopolitical risks, changes in sourcing patterns and uncertainty across international trade routes.

For the Port of Savannah, rising container volumes reinforce the need for continued investment in terminal infrastructure and landside connectivity. Efficient handling of growing cargo volumes is essential to reducing congestion and maintaining reliable cargo flows between marine terminals and inland markets.

The port’s performance also strengthens Savannah’s position as an important logistics hub serving the US Southeast and wider domestic markets. Its connectivity with inland distribution centres and manufacturing regions enables cargo to move beyond the port to a broad customer base.

The latest monthly record indicates continued momentum in containerised trade through Savannah. Port authorities and logistics operators are expected to remain focused on capacity, operational efficiency and inland connectivity as cargo demand evolves.

The strong September throughput further demonstrates the importance of US East Coast ports in supporting resilient supply chains and accommodating changing global trade flows.
