Amid brewing controversy over proposed jetties on river Sal, minister for ports Alexio Sequeira on Friday categorically denied any govt plans for the project. “There is no proposal with govt whatsoever to put up even one jetty on the Sal,” said Sequeira, dismissing claims raised by Congress functionaries. “I don’t know where and how Congress has dreamed of jetties coming up on the Sal.”
The clarification comes after the Benaulim Congress block committee, led by President Keith Gracias, submitted a petition to South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes expressing concerns over reported plans to construct three additional jetties along the river. Congress cited announcements by the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) outlining waterway projects across India, including river Sal.
Local fishing communities from Benaulim, Navelim, and Velim constituencies have raised alarm over potential environmental impacts, particularly fears of coal transportation through these facilities. The petition highlighted river Sal’s critical role in supporting traditional fishing activities, with major fish unloading centres at Cutbona and Mobor.
South Goa district Congress president Savio D’Silva has announced plans to escalate the issue at gram sabhas of riverside panchayats. The opposition has emphasised the river’s existing environmental challenges, including high E coli contamination from sewage discharge, arguing that additional industrial activity could further threaten local livelihoods.
Despite the minister’s denial, Congress functionaries are demanding transparency regarding the IWDC’s announced plans.
