The Moradabad rail division of Indian Railways has launched a containerised freight service for sugar transport, aiming to improve logistics efficiency and reduce handling losses in one of the region’s key agro-industries.
The new service enables sugar to be transported in sealed containers rather than traditional bulk wagons, ensuring better protection from moisture, contamination, and pilferage. Officials said the initiative is expected to streamline supply chains and offer a more reliable transportation option for sugar mills and traders.
Moradabad division, which falls under the Northern Railway zone, serves several sugar-producing regions in Uttar Pradesh. The introduction of containerised movement is likely to benefit mills by reducing transit time and improving cargo safety, particularly for long-distance shipments to consumption centers and ports.
Railway authorities highlighted that containerisation also allows for multimodal connectivity, enabling smoother transfers between rail, road, and port infrastructure. This is expected to enhance export logistics for sugar, especially as India continues to play a significant role in the global sugar market.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that efficient logistics remain critical for maintaining competitiveness amid fluctuating global prices and rising transportation costs. The shift to containers is also aligned with broader efforts to modernize freight operations and increase the share of rail in bulk commodity transport.
Officials indicated that similar container services could be expanded to other commodities in the future, depending on demand and operational feasibility.
The initiative reflects Indian Railways’ ongoing push to adopt more efficient and cargo-friendly solutions, supporting both domestic distribution and export-oriented supply chains.
