    In the period between April to September, the Indian Railways achieved a freight loading of 758.20 million metric tons (MMT), surpassing last year’s 736.68 MT by approximately 21.52 MT. This improvement also translated into higher earnings, with railways generating Rs 81,697 crore, marking a notable increase of about Rs 2,706 crore compared to the same period last year, the Ministry of Railways said in a release.

    Strong growth in freight loading & revenue

    For September alone, the originating freight loading reached 123.53 MT, showcasing a 6.67 percent enhancement over the previous year’s 115.80 MT. This robust performance contributed to freight revenue totalling Rs 12,956.95 crore, indicating a 5.06 percent improvement from September 2022, the release said.

    Breaking down the freight composition into segments, the railways loaded 59.70 MT in coal, 14.29 MT in iron ore, 5.78 MT in pig iron and finished steel, 6.25 MT in cement (excluding clinker), 4.89 MT in clinker, 4.54 MT in foodgrains, 4.23 MT in fertilizers, 4.0 MT in mineral oil, 7.28 MT in containers and 10.10 MT in other goods during September.

    Under the mantra “Hungry For Cargo,” Indian Railways has consistently worked towards enhancing the ease of doing business, prioritising a customer-centric approach, and employing agile policy-making. These efforts, coupled with the dedication of Business Development Units, have contributed significantly to the railways’ commendable achievements in freight loading and revenue generation, the statement said.
