Rijeka Gateway, a joint venture between APM Terminals (APMT) and ENNA Group, has deployed a next-generation private 5G campus network.
According to APMT, 5G intends to have 20 times the data throughput and much-reduced latency than LTE networks, which have been implemented at various terminals in recent years.
The partnership with Croatian telecommunications company Hrvatski Telekom (HT), announced this week, is part of the new terminal’s commitment to environmental responsibility and technological innovation.
Rijeka Gateway is a brand-new, ground-up build with no existing LTE network. This will make the terminal the first HT installation to adopt the Stand Alone (SA) architecture.
5G SA technology reportedly has various advantages, including ultra-low latency and quicker access to larger data speeds, improved security, increased energy efficiency, and service agility and scale via cloud-native, service-based architecture.
Rijeka Gateway, which is set to commence operations in 2025, will primarily employ the HT public mobile network for remotely operated electric equipment.
Electric container handling equipment will have little environmental effect while also mitigating noise and pollution in the neighbouring population.
Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway, said: “The terminal in Rijeka will be the only terminal in this part of Europe with remotely operated cranes, almost all equipment will be electric, and we are installing very advanced energy optimisation and overall terminal management systems. Quality and reliable communication infrastructure is a prerequisite for such operations.
Marijana Bačić, Board Member and Chief Operating Officer for Business Customers at HT, stated: “The project demonstrates Rijeka Gateway’s trust in our ability. This confirms our strategy of delivering business critical communication via our public mobile network.”
Rijeka Gateway, which has a 50-year concession, will be the primary entrance point for container traffic to Europe’s hinterland nations and markets, as well as play an important part in the local economy’s growth.
In April, Rijeka Gateway announced plans to install more than 60 electric container handling equipment.
