Landlocked Rwanda will officially open its largest port tomorrow.

Rubavu port on the shores of Lake Kivu in Western Province is aimed at growing trade with neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Spread over 2 ha, the facility, which has been operating under a pilot phase for the last year, can handle 700,000 tonnes of cargo and at least 2.7m passengers annually. The port can simultaneously accommodate two 500 dwt cargo vessels.

Three other ports are planned along Rwanda’s Kivu shoreline.
