Saudi Arabia’s ports authority, Mawani, saw an 8.58 percent annual increase in cargo throughput tonnage in April, handling over 27.1 million tons of cargo. Mawani handled 557,681 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in April, a 19.55 percent decline from 693,087 TEUs in April last year. Moreover, transshipment containers also saw a decline of 53.49 percent, recording 123,194 TEUs, compared to 264,870 TEUs in 2023.
The number of exported containers Mawani recorded saw a 3.72 percent increase to 216,504 TEUs from 208,741 TEUs in April 2023. Meanwhile, the number of imported containers saw a 0.68 percent decline to 217,983 TEUs, compared to 219,476 TEUs last year. Total general cargo reached 839,368 tons, solid bulk cargo reached 4,108,494 tons, and liquid bulk cargo reached 16,075,089 tons.
Mawani also revealed that maritime traffic saw an 8.72 percent decline to 910 ships from 992 ships in 2023. Moreover, the number of passengers declined by 35.85 percent to 55,277 compared to 86,175 last year. The number of cars also saw a 30.55 percent decline, reaching 69,788 compared to 100,480 cars in 2023.
In line with Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS), Mawani has completed multiple development projects to enhance the infrastructure and operational capacities of the terminals and berths across the Kingdom’s ports. It has equipped them with the most advanced equipment and machinery to ensure increased performance and productivity. These efforts aim to attract investments to Saudi Arabia’s logistics sector and solidify the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub.
