Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA) has revealed its plans to enhance the Cargo Centre and overall logistics services at the Air Cargo India 2024 event in Mumbai. The initiative is part of a larger $650 million expansion project to transform the airport into a leading global aviation hub.

Scheduled for completion by 2026, the expansion will increase the airport’s capacity to 20 million passengers annually, significantly up from its current capabilities.

Growth in passenger and cargo traffic

In 2023, Sharjah Airport’s performance was strong, with a surge in passenger traffic to 13.1 million, nearly double from the 7 million in 2021, showcasing a robust recovery and growth trajectory.

This aligns with SAA’s strategic focus on strengthening its position in the aviation and cargo sectors.

The airport’s cargo operations have also seen a significant uptick, handling around 170,544 tonnes of freight in 2022, a 21% increase from the previous year.

Furthermore, the expansion includes the addition of new passenger and air cargo destinations, underlining the airport’s commitment to enhancing global connectivity.

This strategic move aims to attract more airline customers, especially from markets in Europe and East Asia, contributing to the economic expansion of Sharjah and the UAE.
