Siemens AG, the German multinational technology conglomerate, announced plans to establish India as the focal point for mass transit solutions, as stated by company executives today.
Peter Koerte, the Chief Technology Officer and Strategy Officer at Siemens AG, mentioned that the $ 3 billion substantial order received from the Indian Railways would undoubtedly expedite the manufacturing of components and locomotives within the country. He added that Siemens operates a facility in India dedicated to developing various infrastructure solutions and intends to leverage India as a central hub for mass transit solutions, presenting a significant opportunity.
Earlier this year, Siemens inked a contract worth Rs 260 billion with Indian Railways to supply and maintain electric locomotives for freight transportation in India. This deal stands as the largest locomotive agreement in Siemens Mobility’s history and represents the company’s most significant order in India.
As per the agreement, Siemens will deliver 1,200 electric locomotives with a high capacity of 9000 horsepower (HP) and will also provide maintenance services to the Railways for a duration of 35 years. These deliveries will be carried out over an eleven-year period.
Siemens emphasised its engineering capabilities in India, boasting 30 factories, and expressed its intent to further expand and develop these capacities for the region.
