Siemens has handed over the first batch of D9 freight locomotives to Indian Railways under a ₹33,425 crore contract, marking a key milestone in one of India’s largest rail modernisation projects.

The high-powered D9 locomotives are designed to enhance freight hauling capacity, improve operational efficiency, and support faster movement of goods across the network. Equipped with advanced technology, the engines are expected to boost reliability while reducing energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

The contract includes the manufacturing, supply, and long-term maintenance of the locomotives, with production being carried out at a dedicated facility in Dahod. The project is aligned with India’s push to strengthen its rail freight infrastructure and reduce logistics costs.

Officials said the deployment of D9 locomotives will play a crucial role in increasing average freight speeds and improving turnaround times, particularly on high-density routes. The new engines are also expected to support the shift toward more sustainable and efficient rail transport.

The delivery marks the beginning of phased handovers under the mega deal, which is set to significantly enhance Indian Railways’ freight capabilities over the coming years.
