Shipbuilding and heavy fabrication firm Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd (SDHI) has signed an initial pact with the Indian Maritime University (IMU) to establish Centres of Excellence focused on training, research, and innovation in shipbuilding and naval architecture.

The MoU, inked during a thematic session at IMU’s Chennai campus ahead of India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025, aims to build a skilled talent pool to meet the needs of India’s expanding shipbuilding and heavy fabrication sectors.

The Centres of Excellence will be developed both at SDHI’s shipyard and IMU campuses, offering specialised programmes and research opportunities. The two partners also plan to collaborate with educational institutions, vocational training providers, and government departments to advance maritime skill development in line with India’s long-term vision.

“Together, we aim to nurture the next generation of maritime and shipbuilding professionals who will drive India’s self-reliance and global competitiveness in this sector,” said Rajeev Nayyer, Advisor, SDHI.
