Synergy Marine Group has completed the transportation of 63 wind turbine blades aboard the Kamsarmax bulk carrier SDTR GLORIA, carrying the specialised cargo from Tuticorin, India, to Germany.
The 85,000-dwt-class gearless bulk carrier, designed primarily for conventional dry bulk cargoes such as grain, coal and ore, was specially prepared for the unusual deck cargo operation. The blades were stowed up to three tiers high across the vessel’s deck, requiring detailed planning based on their weight, length, geometry and windage.
According to Synergy Marine Group, the vessel’s deck cargo loading manual and loading computer were updated, while the cargo-securing arrangement was supported by engineering calculations and technical review and approval.
During the voyage, the crew continuously monitored the cargo securing arrangements, vessel motion and weather conditions to ensure that the blades remained within the parameters established during the engineering and loading process.
The operation highlights the growing logistical requirements associated with the renewable energy sector, where transporting oversized wind turbine components from manufacturing and port locations to project sites requires specialised planning and cargo-handling expertise.
