Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy (TNMA), an autonomous body under the Govt. of Tamil Nadu recognized by the Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India, has invited applications for admission to the Pre-Sea Training Course for General Purpose Ratings, which qualifies candidates to serve as ratings on board merchant navy ships (Indian and foreign ships).
The duration of the course that commences on 01st July 2025 is 6 months (25 weeks).
There are 40 seats. The course fee is Rs 1,75,000/- to be paid in one installment before admission.
Eligibility: Applicant should be an unmarried male and should possess one of The following qualifications: (A) Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 10th standard from a recognized board with science and mathematics as subjects, securing minimum 40% marks in English in 10th standard exams Or (B) pass a 2-Year I.T.I. course from a government-approved institute and a recognized board with a minimum 50% aggregate marks in the final year and must have secured minimum 40% marks in English in 10th standard exams OR (C) Diploma or degree pass with an aggregate of 40% marks in the 10th standard with science
and mathematics as subjects and should have secured a minimum of 40% marks in English in the 10th standard exams. The diploma or degree must be recognised by any state or central government or the AICTE.
Age: The applicant must have completed 17½ years and should be below 25 years as of 01.07.2025 in respect of candidates who have passed the X standard and the ITI course. The maximum age limit for admission to the course is 27 years for candidates who have a degree or diploma qualification. The upper age limit is relaxable up to 5 years in respect of SC/ST candidates and 3 years in respect of the non-creamy layer of OBCs of any part of the country.
The applicant must have the original passport and birth certificate while applying for the course.
Medical standards: Candidates shall be physically fit for the sea service as per the Merchant Shipping Act (Medical Examination for Seafarers) Rules 2000.

Filled applications may be sent either by speed post, registered post or courier, along with a non-refundable fee by way of demand draft for Rs 750/- drawn on any nationalised bank in favour of Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy, payable at Thoothukudi, to reach ‘Director, Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy, 333, South Beach Road, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu-628001’, by 5 pm on 11.06.2025. The cover should be superscribed as instructed in the prospectus.
Applications can be submitted via e-mail also to tnma1998@gmail.com, in which case the amount of Rs.. 750/- may be paid through a Demand Draft and a receipt produced.
Final selection will be based on the percentage of marks scored in the 10th standard from a recognised board and a sight test and medical examination to be conducted by D.G. Shipping-approved doctors.
