The Tamil Nadu government has submitted an application to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation seeking site clearance for a proposed greenfield airport at Manikaneri in Ramanathapuram district. The project aims to improve air connectivity to Rameswaram, a major pilgrimage and tourism destination, and support regional economic development.
The proposed airport will cover approximately 600 acres at Manikaneri, selected following technical assessments by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), the state agency overseeing the project, is coordinating the development process. Land acquisition activities are also under way.
Rameswaram attracts large numbers of pilgrims and tourists to destinations including the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Dhanushkodi, Arichalmunai and the memorial of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Currently, visitors largely depend on road and rail transport to reach the region. The proposed airport is expected to provide an additional travel option and improve accessibility for domestic and international visitors.
The state initially assessed five potential locations before Manikaneri was selected following AAI inspections and technical evaluations. The site-clearance application represents an important regulatory step towards advancing the project.
Following site clearance, the project will require further approvals before construction and airport operations can proceed. Details regarding the total project cost, construction schedule and commencement of flight services have not yet been announced.
The proposed airport is expected to strengthen tourism, facilitate passenger movement and create opportunities for businesses in Ramanathapuram district. If implemented, it could improve regional connectivity and support economic activity across southern Tamil Nadu.
