The United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerged as India’s largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in September, overtaking the United States as shipments from the Gulf region rebounded.

The shift highlights the importance of West Asian suppliers in meeting India’s energy requirements, particularly as trade flows adjust to changing shipping conditions and regional supply patterns.

India relies heavily on imported LPG to meet demand from households, commercial establishments and industrial users. A recovery in shipments from the Gulf has helped strengthen the region’s position in India’s LPG import market.

The UAE’s rise to the top supplier position also reflects the significance of shorter shipping routes and established energy trade links between India and Gulf producers. The United States, which has become an important source of LPG for India, slipped in the supplier rankings during the month.

The monthly change in supplier rankings does not necessarily indicate a long-term shift in India’s sourcing strategy. Import volumes can fluctuate due to cargo availability, freight costs, shipping schedules, prices and geopolitical developments.

For India, diversifying LPG sourcing remains important for maintaining supply security and managing import costs. Changes in the balance between Gulf and US shipments will continue to be closely watched by energy traders, shipping companies and importers.

The September figures underscore the continuing role of the UAE and other Gulf producers in supporting India’s energy needs, even as the country maintains trade links with suppliers across different regions.
