V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port Authority), Tuticorin, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to become a partner in Bharat Container Shipping Line (BCSL), a flagship Government of India initiative aimed at strengthening indigenous container shipping capabilities under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
BCSL is envisioned as a national container shipping platform to provide integrated, end-to-end logistics solutions for India’s EXIM and coastal trade, while reducing dependence on foreign shipping lines and enhancing supply chain resilience.
The initiative is a strategic joint effort involving key public-sector stakeholders across the maritime and logistics ecosystem, including the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd., Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Chennai Port Authority, and now V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority. The collaboration reflects coordinated national action spanning ports, shipping, rail logistics, and maritime finance.
The MoU was signed by Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, in the august presence of Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology; and Shri Shantanu Thakur, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
With this partnership, VOC Port Authority is set to play a key role in strengthening India’s container shipping ecosystem, improving multimodal connectivity, and supporting seamless cargo movement. The initiative is expected to enhance logistics efficiency, boost trade competitiveness, and contribute to sustainable growth of India’s maritime sector.
The participation of major ports and logistics entities in BCSL underscores the Government’s commitment to building robust public-sector capabilities and positioning India as a self-reliant and globally competitive maritime nation.
