V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port), Tuticorin, has reported a robust 59.27% year-on-year growth in raw cashew cargo volumes during the April–November 2025 period, compared with the corresponding months in April–November 2024, underscoring the port’s expanding role in supporting agricultural and allied commodity trade.

According to port officials, the sharp rise in raw cashew imports reflects improved operational efficiency, faster cargo turnaround, and strengthened hinterland connectivity, which have collectively enhanced the port’s attractiveness for agri-based trade. The growth also mirrors increasing demand from India’s cashew processing industry, particularly in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states, which rely on steady imports of raw cashew nuts.

    Strengthening agri-commodity logistics

The port has been focusing on optimising its cargo handling systems, storage facilities, and evacuation infrastructure, enabling smoother movement of bulk and break-bulk agricultural commodities. Dedicated berths, mechanised handling solutions and coordinated customs and port procedures have helped reduce dwell time, encouraging importers and traders to route their cargo through Tuticorin.

Officials noted that the port’s strategic location on the southeast coast provides direct maritime access to key cashew-producing regions in Africa and Southeast Asia, making it a preferred gateway for raw cashew shipments destined for southern India’s processing clusters.

    Boost to regional economy

The surge in cashew cargo is expected to generate positive spillover effects across the regional economy, benefiting processors, logistics providers, transporters and allied industries. Cashew processing is a significant employment generator in southern India, and improved cargo flows through VOC Port are likely to support capacity utilisation and export competitiveness of finished cashew products.

    Outlook

With continued investments in infrastructure modernisation, digitalisation of port operations and multimodal connectivity, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority aims to further scale up agri and food commodity handling. Port officials expressed confidence that the momentum in raw cashew cargo would be sustained in the remaining months of FY26, reinforcing Tuticorin’s position as a key agri-cargo hub on India’s east coast.

The strong performance in raw cashew handling adds to VOC Port’s broader efforts to diversify its cargo basket and strengthen its role in India’s agricultural trade logistics ecosystem.
