The Union Government has appointed Vivek Chaturvedi, a 1990-batch Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes) officer, as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) confirmed that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has cleared his appointment to lead the country’s apex indirect tax policy-making body.

Chaturvedi takes over from Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, a 1988-batch IRS officer, who demitted office on November 28, 2025, upon completion of his tenure.

Before joining the CBIC board as a member, Chaturvedi served as the Principal Director General of Vigilance and Chief Vigilance Officer, where he oversaw vigilance administration across the indirect tax ecosystem. His tenure in the vigilance wing focused on strengthening transparency, accountability and internal control frameworks within Customs and GST operations.

Chaturvedi had earlier succeeded Vivek Ranjan, Member (Tax Policy & Legal), who completed his tenure on August 31, 2025.

With more than three decades of experience in vigilance, compliance and indirect tax administration, Chaturvedi’s appointment is expected to boost policy stability and strengthen enforcement capabilities as CBIC navigates evolving trade and tax dynamics.
