In a significant step toward strengthening India’s maritime connectivity and easing international travel, the Union Home Ministry has officially designated Trivandrum Port Vizhinjam in Kerala, along with Hazira and Pipavav ports in Gujarat, as authorised immigration check-posts for both entry and exit of international passengers.
The decision was formalised through a Gazette notification issued on Thursday, marking an expansion of the country’s network of recognised immigration points. This move is expected to streamline immigration procedures for travellers arriving by sea and support the rising volume of international passenger traffic at these emerging ports.
According to officials, the designation will enable these ports to handle immigration clearances with full legal authority, bringing them on par with other established international gateways. The development aligns with India’s broader efforts to modernise port operations, boost trade and tourism, and enhance coastal connectivity under various national maritime initiatives.
Vizhinjam, recently gaining prominence with the launch of its international transshipment terminal, is poised to benefit significantly from this status due to its strategic location and growing global traffic. Similarly, Hazira and Pipavav—key commercial ports on the western coast—are expected to witness increased movement of international passengers as operations expand.
The Home Ministry’s decision is seen as a proactive measure to support the evolving needs of India’s maritime sector while ensuring secure and efficient immigration management across the country’s coastline.
