Vizhinjam port authorities plan to install a dynamic mooring system at the port in a month. It will make the loading and unloading of containers from anchored ships hassle free.

According to authorities, the machinery has arrived and will be installed soon after training is provided to the mooring staff at the port. The new equipment will be set up at the quay, allowing ships to be moored to it so that sea surges and tides do not impact the ships.

An official stated that the ships would remain steady and loading and unloading operations would continue despite bad weather and fear of rough seas.

This would reduce the turnaround time of a ship, allowing ships carrying cargo to depart in less than a day.

Already, the turnaround time at the port is lower compared to other major ports. The initiative aims to further reduce this so that more cargo can be unloaded and ships can be dispatched soon after arrival. The port has handled close to 10 lakh containers in a year, which is a substantial quantity despite the limitation.
