Tuticorin International Container Terminal (TICT), located at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tamil Nadu, has been designated a Green Terminal after achieving 100% electrification of its operational equipment.

The status was announced by Vijay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, during a review of port development projects. The initiative marks a step forward in the port’s efforts to promote cleaner and more energy-efficient cargo-handling operations.

As part of the green transition, 13 electric Internal Transfer Vehicles (E-ITVs) were flagged off to support container movement within the terminal. The deployment is expected to reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered equipment and help lower emissions from terminal operations.

Electrifying cargo-handling equipment is an important part of efforts to reduce the environmental impact of port activities. Container terminals require substantial energy for moving cargo between vessels, storage yards and transport vehicles, making equipment efficiency a key sustainability priority.

VOC Port is also advancing wider green maritime initiatives, including green methanol bunkering infrastructure, a green hydrogen pilot project and renewable energy installations. The port has outlined investments exceeding ₹18,400 crore in green maritime infrastructure and other development projects.

The terminal’s Green Terminal designation reinforces VOC Port’s focus on sustainable port operations while supporting its broader plans to expand cargo-handling capacity and strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position in maritime trade.

The move reflects a wider industry trend towards electrification, cleaner fuels and lower-emission logistics infrastructure across India’s major ports.
