Wan Hai Lines has announced the formal adoption of biofuel in its global fleet in response to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) emissions reduction objectives for 2030 and 2050.
The WAN HAI 510 (also known as Tai Chun), a 4,333 TEU containership, is Wan Hai Lines’ first biofuel-powered vessel. It now travels on the CI6 route between the Far East and India.
In partnership with fuel provider KPI OceanConnect, the vessel was successfully supplied with B24 biofuel in Singapore, verified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC).
This fuel is a combination of Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester biodiesel (UCOME) and Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), and it is projected to cut carbon emissions by 20 percent compared to standard VLSFO.
A Wan Hai official stated: “The adoption of biofuel is a crucial step in our journey towards carbon reduction. We are responsible for seeking more environmentally friendly solutions and further achieving ESG energy-saving and carbon reduction by using low-carbon fuels across our fleet.”
