Hydrogen-electric aviation pioneer ZeroAvia has announced a landmark partnership with RVL Aviation to roll out the world’s first zero-emission hydrogenelectric air cargo services. The initiative, based at East Midlands Airport in the UK, represents a significant step forward in the global drive to decarbonize airfreight operations.
The partnership will see RVL Aviation’s fleet of Cessna Grand Caravan 208B aircraft retrofitted with ZeroAvia’s ZA600 hydrogen-electric powertrains, eliminating the need for new aircraft while introducing a clean propulsion technology. The ZA600 system uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, which powers electric motors, with water as the only byproduct — making it one of the most sustainable alternatives to conventional aviation fuel currently in development.
The new cargo service is expected to commence commercial operations once the necessary certifications for the engines, airframe integration, and operational services are secured. Retrofit work and crew training are already underway, with both companies confident about achieving operational readiness in the near future. ZeroAvia estimates that nearly 1,000 similar cargo aircraft worldwide could potentially be converted to run on hydrogen-electric power, offering a scalable path toward greener logistics.
This milestone marks the latest in a series of strategic moves by ZeroAvia, a fast-rising name in hydrogen-electric propulsion. The company has previously collaborated with Swiss-based start-up Jekta to develop a hydrogen-electric powertrain for flying boats and with Natilus for its upcoming Kona cargo transporter. The new partnership with RVL Aviation places ZeroAvia firmly at the forefront of sustainable cargo aviation innovation.

ZeroAvia Founder and CEO Val Miftakhov highlighted the growing interest from customers eager to be among the first to operate zero-emission routes, stressing the importance of accelerating certification testing to bring the service to market. “We now need to double our focus on certification so we can turn this ambition into reality,” he said.
