The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved three railway projects worth ₹7,927 crore aimed at reducing oil imports, lowering carbon emissions by 271 crore kilograms, and enhancing connectivity. The projects will add 639 kilometers to the Indian Railways network, covering Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
The projects include the 160 km Jalgaon–Manmad 4th line, the 131 km Bhusawal–Khandwa 3rd and 4th lines, and the 84 km Prayagraj (Iradatganj)–Manikpur 3rd line. These multi-tracking efforts are expected to ease congestion on the Mumbai-Prayagraj-Varanasi corridor , one of the busiest railway sections, and reduce logistics costs by enabling the movement of 51 million tonnes of additional freight annually.
The projects’ environmental impact is significant, with carbon savings equivalent to planting 11 crore trees. By promoting rail over road and reducing oil dependency, the projects support India’s climate goals while fostering economic growth.
Regional and socio-economic impact
The approved projects span seven districts across three states and benefit a population of 38 lakh in 1,319 villages, including two Aspirational Districts, Khandwa and Chitrakoot. Improved rail infrastructure will enhance passenger services, including pilgrimage routes to Nashik (Trimbakeshwar), Khandwa (Omkareshwar), Varanasi (Kashi Vishwanath), Prayagraj, and Shirdi.
Tourism is also expected to grow with better access to destinations like Khajuraho, Ajanta & Ellora Caves, and Devgiri Fort, among others.
Freight and infrastructure benefits
The projects will support essential freight movement for agricultural products, coal, steel, cement, and fertilizers. Strengthened rail infrastructure underlines Indian Railways’ position as a sustainable, energy-efficient transport system, reducing dependence on oil-intensive road logistics.
These projects are aligned with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, integrating planning for seamless movement of people and goods. By creating employment and self-employment opportunities in the covered regions, the projects will contribute to the government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
