A few fast trains bound for Villupuram from Chennai Egmore railway station were delayed after a goods train derailed near Tambaram railway station on Thursday (March 27, 2025) night. The railway maintenance staff are engaged in putting the derailed trains onto the track for normal resumption of services.

A senior official of Chennai division of Southern Railway said a freight train meant for transporting cars was involved in shunting between Tambaram and Sanatorium railway station. As the freight train was moving at slow speed from Sanatorium station on the shunting line, three empty coaches derailed as it was proceeding towards Tambaram station.

Due to the derailment and taking into consideration the safety aspect a few express trains proceeding from Chennai Egmore towards various destinations via Villupuram have been delayed.

Senior railway officials are at the spot for restoring operation.
