Singapore is looking to deepen collaboration with India in maritime sector with a focus on green shipping, it’s Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said on Tuesday.
Yong and Singapore’s Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow are among six ministers visiting India to participate in India-Singapore ministerial roundtable that begins on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Singaporean ministers visited the second phase of Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at JNPA port and participated in a dialogue on green and digital maritime corridors.
Working on MoU
Yong said India and Singapore are working on a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) to promote development and use of low emission marine fuels and adoption of digital technologies as a part of their collaboration.
“The success of BMCT demonstrates how Singaporean companies can contribute to India’s economic growth and development. Port terminals like these will play a critical role in keeping trade flowing in times of global uncertainty,” he said.
Developed by Singapore based firm PSA, the second phase which will be inaugurated next month will double BMCT’s handling capacity to 4.8 million twenty feet long containers a year.
This will make it the largest standalone port terminal in India.
“As Singapore and India celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations there is room for us to do more by deepening our collaboration particularly in the maritime sector,” he said.
Yong and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also presided over signing of a MoU for ₹3,000 crore investment by Singapore based Mapletree Investments in logistics, warehouses, industrial parks and data centres in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur.
