In a major milestone for India’s inland waterways, the first-ever commercial cargo of Birla White was successfully unloaded at the Multi-Modal Terminal (MMT) Sahibganj on National Waterway-1 (NW-1). The development marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable logistics along the River Ganga.
Built under the flagship Jal Marg Vikas Project, the Sahibganj terminal, developed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), boasts a cargo handling capacity of 3.03 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Strategically located in Jharkhand, the terminal is expected to enhance trade efficiency, provide cost-effective transportation, and reduce carbon footprint by shifting cargo movement from road to waterways.
The arrival of Birla White cargo highlights the growing confidence of industry players in adopting inland water transport as a viable and eco-friendly logistics mode. This landmark development is set to boost regional connectivity, create economic opportunities, and strengthen India’s push towards greener supply chains.
