Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Japan saw India and Japan elevate their strategic partnership with the signing of 13 agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs), spanning a wide range of sectors from security and space to clean energy, digital innovation and cultural exchange.
Key highlights included the adoption of an India-Japan Joint Vision for the Next Decade and a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation, underlining shared priorities in regional stability and defence collaboration. A major step in space exploration came with the implementing arrangement between ISRO and JAXA for joint lunar polar exploration.
On energy and environment, the two nations signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia and an MoU on Joint Crediting Mechanism, reinforcing their commitment to a low-carbon future. Cooperation also expanded to decentralised wastewater management, environmental projects, and sustainable resource development.
The visit also advanced people-to-people and institutional partnerships through an action plan for human resource exchange, the launch of India-Japan Digital Partnership 2.0, and cultural collaborations. Further MoUs were inked between India’s Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and between India’s Ministry of Science & Technology and Japan’s MEXT.
The agreements mark a comprehensive strengthening of Indo-Japanese ties, deepening cooperation in technology, energy transition, institutional linkages, and cultural exchange, paving the way for a more robust partnership in the coming decade.
