The Port of Rotterdam Authority has set to develop a 45-hectare terminal on the north-western Maasvlakte dedicated to offshore wind activities.
The facility will support storage, transport, (pre-)assembly, and delivery of components for both turbines and foundations, featuring direct nautical access, heavy-duty quays, and advanced logistics infrastructure.
The terminal is expected to be operational by mid-2029, with interested market parties invited to join a consultation starting today.
The terminal will include 835 metres of quay capable of accommodating the latest offshore wind installation vessels, including jack-up vessels, and will support pre-assembly on the quay.
A RoRo facility will ensure multimodal transport capabilities. In addition to construction, the terminal will also handle decommissioning activities for offshore wind farms.
The project aims to address a critical bottleneck in port capacity for the offshore wind sector, enabling the continued growth of wind energy in the North Sea.
Matthijs van Doorn, Vice President Commercial of the Port Authority, said: “With this new terminal, we are making an important contribution to the necessary capacity for the offshore wind sector. Due to its direct location on the North Sea, deep draught and existing offshore cluster, the Port of Rotterdam is ideally suited for these activities.”
Recently, the Rotterdam Municipal Executive and the Port of Rotterdam Authority presented the updated Shore Power Strategy 2025–2035 to the city council.
