In a landmark development for agricultural logistics in the Kashmir Valley, the first fertiliser freight train arrived at the Anantnag goods terminal on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening the region’s agricultural supply chain.
Northern Railway’s Jammu Division continues to record steady progress in freight transportation, with increasing inward movement of essential commodities. The latest milestone was achieved with the successful arrival of a freight train comprising 21 BCN wagons from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh.
According to an official spokesperson, the rake carried approximately 1,339 tonnes of PDM (Potash Derived from Molasses) fertiliser supplied by Indian Potash Limited. The direct rail connectivity to Anantnag is expected to ensure a timely and uninterrupted supply of fertilisers to farmers across the Kashmir Valley.
“The arrival of fertilisers directly at the Anantnag goods terminal will significantly reduce dependence on road transport, lower logistics costs, and make fertilisers more readily available to farmers, especially during the critical sowing season,” the spokesperson said.
The initiative is expected to expedite distribution, improve storage efficiency, and enhance access to bulk agricultural inputs for both traders and farmers. Officials said the development will have a cascading impact on agricultural productivity, local markets, and overall economic growth in the region.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, termed the development a transformative moment for the Valley’s fertiliser logistics ecosystem. “This achievement has been made possible through continuous marketing efforts by the division. We are also in discussions with other major fertiliser companies to bring more freight rakes directly to the Anantnag rail terminal,” he said.
Singhal added that such initiatives play a vital role in improving connectivity, boosting trade, and integrating Kashmir more closely with national supply networks.
Railway officials emphasized that the successful handling of bulk fertiliser consignments at Anantnag will open new opportunities in logistics and allied sectors, reinforcing the railways’ commitment to infrastructure development and sustainable economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
