Scorpio Tankers has expanded its order for LR2 product tankers at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC), increasing the contract to a total of four vessels as part of its ongoing fleet renewal and growth strategy.

The additional orders underscore the company’s confidence in long-term demand for refined petroleum product transportation. The LR2 vessels, typically in the 110,000–115,000 dwt range, are widely used for carrying clean petroleum products such as diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline on long-haul routes.

Industry sources indicate that the newbuildings will be constructed with modern, fuel-efficient designs and are expected to comply with the latest environmental regulations, including energy efficiency and emissions standards. The ships are likely to feature advanced hull coatings, optimised engine performance, and energy-saving technologies to reduce fuel consumption and carbon intensity.

Scorpio Tankers has been actively modernising its fleet, focusing on eco-design vessels to enhance operating efficiency and meet tightening regulatory requirements in global shipping. The decision to upsize the Dalian order reflects strong freight market fundamentals and a strategic push to maintain a competitive position in the product tanker segment.

Deliveries of the vessels are expected over the next few years, further strengthening Scorpio Tankers’ presence in the LR2 market and supporting its long-term chartering and spot market operations.
