APM Terminals (APMT) has formally taken over operations at the Balboa container terminal, alongside the rollout of a new terminal operating system (TOS) aimed at enhancing efficiency and service reliability.

The transition marks a significant operational shift at Port of Balboa, a key gateway located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. The new IT platform is designed to streamline vessel planning, yard management, gate processes and real-time cargo tracking.

APMT said the upgraded system will improve data visibility for shipping lines, freight forwarders and transport operators, enabling faster turnaround times and more predictable container flows. The digital transformation is also expected to optimise berth allocation and yard utilisation.

The takeover follows recent developments in Panama’s port landscape, with authorities seeking continuity and stability in terminal operations. Industry observers note that the introduction of a modern TOS is critical for maintaining competitiveness, particularly given the strategic importance of canal-linked ports in global trade.

APMT indicated that it has been working closely with employees, customers and local stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with training and system testing conducted ahead of the official go-live.

With Balboa handling significant transshipment volumes, the operational upgrade is expected to strengthen its position as a major hub for cargo moving between Asia, the Americas and beyond.
