Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has surpassed its entire previous fiscal year’s cargo throughput with a month still remaining in the current financial year, reflecting robust growth across key cargo segments.

According to port officials, the milestone was achieved on the back of higher volumes of dry bulk, breakbulk and containerised cargo handled at both the Kolkata Dock System and Haldia Dock Complex. Improved vessel turnaround times and enhanced operational efficiency also contributed to the performance boost.

SMPK’s management attributed the strong growth to proactive engagement with trade stakeholders, streamlined documentation processes and better hinterland connectivity. Increased coastal shipping and inland waterway movements further supported cargo inflows and outflows.

Industry observers noted that the port has been focusing on capacity augmentation and mechanisation initiatives to improve productivity and attract additional cargo. Officials said sustained demand from eastern and northeastern India’s industrial and agricultural sectors played a key role in driving volumes.

With a month left in the fiscal year, port authorities expressed confidence of setting a new annual cargo handling record. The achievement is seen as a positive signal for trade momentum in the region and underscores SMPK’s position as a vital gateway for eastern India’s maritime commerce.
