The Government of India has extended the minimum import price (MIP) on natural honey until December 31, aiming to protect domestic beekeepers from cheaper overseas shipments and stabilize local market prices.

The continuation of the price floor ensures that imported honey cannot be sold below a specified threshold, preventing undercutting of domestic producers. The measure is particularly significant for small and medium-scale beekeepers who have been facing pricing pressure due to low-cost imports.

Officials noted that the decision was taken after reviewing domestic production levels and market conditions. By maintaining the MIP, authorities intend to safeguard farmer incomes while ensuring fair competition in the market.

India’s honey industry has witnessed steady growth in recent years, supported by government initiatives to promote apiculture and boost rural livelihoods. However, industry stakeholders have raised concerns over the influx of low-priced imports affecting profitability.

Exporters and traders said the extension provides policy stability and allows domestic producers to better plan their production and sales strategies. At the same time, the government is expected to continue monitoring price trends and supply dynamics before taking a call on any further extension beyond December.

The move reflects a broader policy approach to balance consumer interests with the need to support domestic agriculture and allied sectors.
