The surcharge is intended to offset the additional operational costs associated with maintaining reliable services during periods of reduced water levels.
The new surcharge will apply to applicable container shipments on MSC’s Montreal services from the specified effective date. Customers are advised to review the carrier’s updated tariff schedule for details on the applicable charges and cargo coverage.
Low water conditions on inland waterways can require vessels to operate with reduced drafts, limiting the amount of cargo they can carry and increasing transportation costs. Shipping lines periodically introduce such surcharges to help recover expenses linked to these operational constraints.
MSC said the measure is part of its ongoing efforts to ensure service continuity and maintain efficient cargo flows despite seasonal navigational challenges affecting access to the Port of Montreal.
