Maersk has reinstated trans-Suez routing for its WAF6 service, marking a significant adjustment to its network as security conditions and operational assessments allow a gradual return to the Suez Canal. The move is expected to improve transit times and strengthen connectivity between Asia, the Mediterranean, and West Africa.

The WAF6 service had previously been rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope amid heightened security risks in the Red Sea, resulting in longer voyage times, higher fuel consumption, and increased operating costs. By returning to the Suez Canal, Maersk aims to offer customers shorter transit times, improved schedule reliability, and more efficient vessel deployment.

The revised routing is expected to benefit exporters and importers moving containerised cargo between Asian manufacturing centres and key West African markets. Commodities such as consumer goods, industrial machinery, automotive parts, electronics, and retail products are likely to experience faster delivery and enhanced supply chain efficiency.

Maersk said the decision follows ongoing monitoring of regional security conditions and reflects its commitment to balancing operational efficiency with the safety of its vessels, crews, and cargo. The company continues to evaluate geopolitical developments and may adjust service routes if circumstances change.

The restoration of trans-Suez operations also supports better utilisation of fleet capacity by reducing sailing distances and voyage durations. Shorter routes can help lower fuel consumption and vessel emissions while improving equipment availability across the shipping network.

Industry analysts view the return of the WAF6 service to the Suez Canal as a positive sign for maritime trade, although carriers remain cautious given the evolving security environment in the Red Sea. Shipping lines are expected to continue closely assessing regional risks while seeking to maintain reliable and cost-effective services for global customers.
