Sallaum Lines has strengthened its fleet expansion strategy by signing a new shipbuilding contract with China Merchants Shipyard for the construction of one firm 8,600 CEU Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC), with an option for an additional vessel. The LNG dual-fuel, ammonia-ready vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2029.
The latest order follows the company’s recently announced agreement with Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry for two firm 8,600 CEU PCTCs, along with options for two more vessels, underscoring Sallaum Lines’ continued investment in expanding its modern RoRo fleet.
With the new contract, Sallaum Lines’ total newbuilding programme now comprises nine vessels with a combined investment exceeding USD 850 million. The programme includes four vessels already delivered, two vessels scheduled for delivery later this year, and three vessels planned for delivery in 2029.
The new 8,600 CEU vessel will be designed to transport passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, trucks, heavy machinery, and project cargo, providing greater operational flexibility across the company’s global trade routes spanning Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
The vessel will feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion and an ammonia-ready design, enabling compliance with evolving environmental regulations while supporting the industry’s transition toward lower-emission shipping.
Commenting on the order, Hasan Sallaum, Managing Director of Sallaum Lines, said the latest investment reflects the company’s confidence in the long-term prospects of the global PCTC market. He noted that customers increasingly require greater capacity, operational reliability, cargo flexibility, and environmentally sustainable shipping solutions, adding that the new vessel has been designed to meet both current operational requirements and future fuel transition needs.
The order also highlights the growing role of Chinese shipyards in the global car carrier construction market as demand for large, fuel-efficient PCTCs continues to rise. By securing additional delivery slots for 2029, Sallaum Lines aims to strengthen its long-term fleet capacity and enhance its ability to serve automotive manufacturers and RoRo customers worldwide.
