A customs-related dispute at Calicut International Airport has reportedly left a consignment of perishable vegetables worth around ₹8 lakh stranded, resulting in significant spoilage and financial losses for exporters. The delay, attributed to disagreements over export-import clearance procedures, has highlighted the vulnerability of time-sensitive cargo to administrative bottlenecks.
The affected shipment, intended for overseas markets, remained held at the airport beyond its permissible storage period, causing the vegetables to deteriorate before they could be dispatched. Exporters have raised concerns over the handling of the consignment, stating that prolonged clearance delays undermined the quality of the produce and rendered it unsuitable for export.
Industry stakeholders have expressed concern that such incidents could damage the credibility of India’s fresh produce exports, where timely customs clearance and uninterrupted cold chain logistics are essential.
