Yang Ming Marine Transport has unveiled plans to increase the proportion of owned vessels in its container fleet to 60%, aiming to strengthen operational resilience and reduce its dependence on chartered tonnage amid tightening vessel availability.

The Taiwanese container shipping line said expanding fleet ownership will provide greater control over capacity deployment, improve schedule reliability and enhance its ability to respond to changing market conditions. The strategy is intended to address long-term vessel supply constraints while supporting sustainable growth across its global liner network.

Currently, Yang Ming relies on a mix of owned and chartered vessels to serve international trade routes. By increasing the share of owned ships, the carrier expects to reduce exposure to charter market volatility, optimize operating costs and improve service stability during periods of high demand or vessel shortages.

The company said fleet renewal and modernization will remain a key priority, with investments focused on fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vessels that comply with evolving international emissions regulations. These additions are expected to support both operational efficiency and the company’s long-term decarbonization goals.

Yang Ming noted that the global container shipping market continues to face uncertainty driven by geopolitical tensions, changing trade patterns and evolving regulatory requirements. Strengthening fleet ownership is expected to enhance the carrier’s competitiveness while providing greater flexibility to meet customer demand and maintain reliable services across key trade lanes.
