The Port of Thessaloniki has taken delivery of eight new hybrid diesel-electric straddle carriers, marking another milestone in its ongoing programme to modernise container terminal operations and strengthen its role as a leading logistics hub in Southeastern Europe. The new equipment is being commissioned alongside the Pier 6 expansion project, enhancing the port’s cargo-handling capabilities, storage capacity and operational efficiency.

The investment forms part of ThPA S.A.’s broader infrastructure modernisation strategy. Since 2018, the port has added 12 straddle carriers, a mobile harbour crane and two New Panamax ship-to-shore cranes capable of handling vessels exceeding 10,000 TEUs. The latest hybrid machines further expand the terminal’s operational capacity while supporting growing container volumes.

Manufactured in Europe, the hybrid straddle carriers combine diesel-electric technology to reduce fuel consumption by around 18% while lowering emissions compared with conventional diesel-powered equipment. The carriers are designed to improve yard stacking efficiency, increase container storage through higher stacking capability and speed up truck and vessel turnaround times, helping ease gate congestion and boost terminal productivity.

ThPA said the new fleet supports its transition towards more sustainable port operations while ensuring reliable and efficient container handling. The investment is expected to enhance cargo flows, improve service quality and reinforce the Port of Thessaloniki’s competitiveness as a key gateway for regional and international trade.
