The Australian Government has released its first Maritime Emissions Reduction National Action Plan (MERNAP), setting out a national framework to accelerate decarbonisation across the maritime sector. The plan focuses on ports, shipping, energy, domestic commercial vessels, and workforce development.
A key priority is investment in port infrastructure and operations that can support lower-emission shipping. The government also plans to reduce regulatory barriers for emerging maritime technologies and encourage the adoption of cleaner fuels and energy solutions.
The action plan is designed to complement Australia’s existing green shipping initiatives, including cooperation with international partners on green shipping corridors. Australia and Singapore are already working to develop a Green and Digital Shipping Corridor focused on zero- and near-zero-emission fuels, digitalisation and related technologies.
MERNAP also highlights the importance of developing maritime skills and training as the industry transitions to new technologies and fuels. The government said early emissions reductions will help minimise future disruption and costs while keeping Australian shipping competitive.
The plan marks a significant step in Australia’s efforts to align its maritime sector with the global transition towards net-zero emissions and create opportunities for investment in cleaner port and shipping infrastructure.
