Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) handled 48,191 loaded rakes carrying 135.05 million tonnes of freight during FY2025-26, highlighting their growing role in India’s rail freight network.
The freight movement covered a substantial volume of cargo across the railway network, with the SPVs supporting efficient transportation of commodities and strengthening rail-based logistics operations.
The performance comes amid continued efforts by Indian Railways to increase freight loading and improve the efficiency of rail transportation. Rail freight remains an important component of India’s logistics system, particularly for bulk commodities, containers, automobiles and industrial cargo.
RVNL’s SPV model enables the company to develop and operate railway-related infrastructure through project-specific entities, helping mobilise investment and expand freight-handling capabilities.
The 135.05-million-tonne freight volume recorded in FY26 underlines the increasing contribution of RVNL-linked entities to India’s freight transportation capacity and the broader shift towards strengthening rail-based logistics.
